Zebra Obliquidens
Astatotilapia latifasciata is a hardy Victorian-region haplochromine from the marginal swamps of the Lake Kyoga basin in Uganda, now widespread in the hobby thanks to captive breeding. Males show bold black vertical bars over yellow flanks, while females stay drabber. It is an active, boisterous maternal mouthbrooder best kept as one male with several females to spread aggression, ideally in a group of four or more. Provide a spacious tank of at least 200 litres with rockwork, open sand and robust tankmates such as other mbuna-style or Victorian cichlids. Water should be hard and alkaline, around 22-27°C, pH 7.5-8.5. Feed a varied omnivorous diet based on quality cichlid pellets, spirulina and occasional frozen foods; avoid excess protein to prevent bloat.
