Midas cichlid

The Midas cichlid is a large, powerful Central American cichlid from the lakes and rivers of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and one of the parent species behind the man-made blood parrot hybrid. Adults reach around 30 cm and often develop a pronounced nuchal hump, especially dominant males; many wild-type fish turn bright orange-gold, giving the species its name. It is highly territorial and aggressive, digging substrate and rearranging decor, so it needs a robust tank of at least 400 litres, strong filtration and secure hardscape, ideally kept as a single specimen or a proven pair. Maintain 24-28C, pH 6.5-8.0 and moderately hard water. An omnivore, it eats pellets, and vegetable and meaty foods; avoid excessive fatty items. Its intelligence and boldness make it rewarding for dedicated keepers.
